Original Photography From Dover, Kent

By Marcus The Photographer

A local photography blog celebrating Dover through original photographs, stories and observations from Marcus The Photographer.

From Dover Castle, the White Cliffs, and the Port of Dover to local parks, coastal views, maritime heritage, and quiet everyday details, this collection reflects the character of a town shaped by history, landscape, and the sea.

As a Dover-based photographer, I use this blog to share the places, light, atmosphere and moments that make the town so distinctive.

Some images are scenic, some are personal, and some simply record the changing face of Dover through thoughtful local photography.

Kearsney Parks is one of Dover’s most elegant outdoor spaces, with lakes, bridges, gardens, trees and open green areas.

It is a quieter view of Dover, away from the coast and castle, but just as much a part of the town’s character.

Ferries Past and Present

For many people, the ferries are part of Dover’s identity, connecting the town to travel, work, memory and movement.

Echoes Memorial Artwork Dover Port

Echoes Memorial Artwork

The Echoes memorial at the Port of Dover is a striking tribute set against one of the town’s most historic coastal backdrops.

Created to mark the 90th anniversary of radar and the 80th anniversary of VE Day, the artwork connects Dover’s wartime history with remembrance, protection and peace.

With the harbour, ferries and White Cliffs nearby, Echoes feels closely tied to a town shaped by defence, movement and memory.

Marcus The Photographer talks about photography & AI

AI Versus Photography

Artificial intelligence has transformed our perspective on images. It can generate dramatic skies, imagined landscapes, and polished portraits. When used creatively, AI is fascinating and visually impressive.

A photograph is tied to a real moment, reflecting the day's light, the place's atmosphere, the people present, and the emotions felt. Real photography holds meaning as it records actual events, whether a wedding, a newborn session, or a scenic view.

For me, photography goes beyond aesthetics; it preserves memories, tells authentic stories, and captures fleeting feelings. AI can create images, but photography captures memories.

Having my photography displayed at Dover Library was a proud and meaningful moment.

Local photography can help people see familiar places differently. It can record atmosphere, capture detail and show the character of a town through fresh eyes.

This case study reflects why photographing Dover matters to me and why local places deserve to be captured with care.

Within The Gaze Award Winning Photography

Within The Gaze

This photograph was taken in Iceland on a grey, muted day when the light felt flat and unremarkable.

It became meaningful later, during editing, when I noticed my own reflection captured subtly in the subject’s eye.

That small detail completely changed the image, turning it into something more personal, intimate, and quietly powerful.

The photograph was commended in the Eyes Only category.

A Moody Dover Castle

I have photographed Dover Castle many times, but this image stands out because of its atmosphere.

The light, sky and familiar outline of the castle come together to create a photograph that feels dramatic, timeless and strongly connected to Dover.

It became one of my favourite images and was later selected for display at Dover Library.
