The Lifeboat Station

January 2025

The newly established Lifeboat Station is a great location or Dover Photography.

Strategically situated on the western side of the Port of Dover in Kent, an area known for its breathtaking view and rich maritime history.

This prime location is perfect for all photographer enthusiasts and casual visitors, and it offers a unique opportunity to explore the RNLI lifeboat station as well as its charming shop filled with various RNLI merchandise.

The RNLI City of London II is prominently anchored in the harbour right in front of the Lifeboat Station, providing an excellent photographer opportunity for capturing stunning photographs, especially during sunrise and sunset when the light enhances the beauty of the scenery.

Walmer Castle

January 2025

Walmer Castle is an impressive artillery fort that was originally constructed by Henry VIII in the scenic locality of Walmer, Kent, between the years 1539 and 1540.

This historical structure showcases a remarkable blend of military architecture and English heritage.

Comprising a keep and four distinct circular bastions, this stunning moated stone castle features a total of 39 firing positions located on the upper levels, all designed specifically for artillery. The fortification reflects the military strategies of its time and serves as a significant historical landmark.

The castle and beautifully landscaped gardens provide ample photography opportunities for every type of photographer, from amateurs to professionals seeking to capture the essence of this extraordinary location.

The Zeebrugge Raid 1918

December 2024

The Zeebrugge Raid on the 23 April 1918, was an attempt by the British Royal Navy to block the Belgian port of Bruges-Zeebrugge during the First World War.

The British intended to sink obsolete ships in the canal entrance to prevent German vessels from leaving port.

There is a memorial in St James Cemetery in Dover where the raid and the people who took part are remembered.

I love Dover photography and local history and blended both hobbies to remember the people who sacrificed everything.

Dover Castle can be seen from the park and is only a short walk.

Kearsney Abbey, Russell Gardens and Bushy Ruff.

Air Rescue

I have been incredibly fortunate to have the photography opportunity to capture a wide array of photo moments involving military, air rescue, and air ambulance helicopters.

These moments have allowed me to witness the power and grace of these aircraft, from flying over the Port of Dover to gracefully touching down at the Dover Coastguard Station which is situated against the stunning backdrop of the White Cliffs of Dover, an iconic location that adds to the charm of the scene.

A normally unannounced event where the chance appears to capture these helicopters in action and presents a brilliant photogrphic opportunity for photographers.

The Bird Photographer

Botany Bay Broadstairs

Botany Bay is a bay in Broadstairs, opening to the north sea, located in Kent, England.

Botany Bay is the northernmost of seven bays in Broadstairs, featuring chalk cliffs and a sea stack, making it a popular tourist spot.

This location offers excellent photography opportunities with its stunning cliff views and coastal erosion examples.

At the right time you can capture stunning view as the sun rises with a backdrop of the cliffs.

Botany Bay is also known as a filming site, appearing in productions like BBC's D-Day: The Last Heroes and various brand advertisements.

As a photographer, I have always been captivated by the bustling traffic ebbing and flowing in and out of the historic Port of Dover in Kent. Reculver Towers Herne Bay in Kent

The striking twin towers of the medieval church at Reculver stand as a remarkable feature against the skyline of Herne Bay.

This location offers fantastic opportunities for a photographer to capture beautiful images.

Once a site for one of the earliest Roman forts established to defend against Saxon invasions, it later transformed into an Anglo-Saxon monastery before becoming the parish church for Reculver.

The majestic towers were constructed during the church's remodelling in the 12th century.

Although much of the area has been lost due to coastal erosion, the twin towers remain alongside the remnants of the early Roman fort.

With the recent development at the Port, there’s an abundance of opportunities for the photographer at all skill levels to capture stunning images.

Opened in 2021, the Marina Curve has created a vast new outdoor space for the public to enjoy and has revitalised the waterfront. This exciting waterside development is brimming with activities, entertainment, and top-notch food stalls for every photographer to explore. 

The charming paths, vibrant flower beds, vintage street lights, and breathtaking views make the Marina Curve a perfect spot to unwind in the warmer weather. An incredible array of food and drink stalls awaits, offering delightful local specialties in Clock Tower Square and along the pier, just in time for the summer season.

Old Dover Postcards

I have found it particularly interesting to look back at old postcards of Dover and find the precise location where a specific photo was taken from many years ago.

It is truly great to stand in the very spot where a photograph may have been captured around 100 years ago and attempt to replicate the same photograph, providing a unique connection to the past.

I often take a look around eBay and find stunning photo postcards of Dover in Kent. Then, I make it my mission to track down exactly where the photographer would have stood to capture the amazing image portrayed in those postcards.
